Gabriel Faure's Impromptu op. 86 is one of the most emblematic pieces ever written for harp, a typical example of the French School of the early 20th century. The work is remarkably well-suited to the instrument: every gesture falls perfectly under the player's fingers. The kind of compositional styles used here are sometimes academic, virtuosic, or highly idiomatic, sometimes harmonically rich and unpredictable. The volume contains an historical introduction in French and English by the noted harpist Constance Luzzati. – New engraving.
