Pepper Choplin burst onto the church choral market with this break-out hit. It was such a success as an anthem, he developed it into a best-selling cantata by the same name. Told as a troubadour sharing a story, the folk-like quality of the music and message was a fresh approach for congregations. The anthem still moves listeners to tears with its touching portrayal of the cross.
